RE: APRIL EDUCATION FORUM
Dear Education Forum Participant:
We would like to invite you or a member of your organization to participate in our Education Forum being held on Monday, April 24th 2017. The focus of this Education Forum will be an update of some of the many learning activities that our Trades department has been coordinating in SD54 schools.
A group of Smithers Secondary students will share their experiences from the recent Skills Canada competitions. The Skills Canada competition is a test of a student’s skill competence in a variety of trades’ areas. Students participate in the regional competition in Terrace and if they win gold in their trade group they qualify to compete in the provincials in Abbottsford. SD54 was very successful in Terrace winning gold in welding, electrical and pro- cook division. As part of a direct entry category SSS also sent a four person team to compete in the robotics category.
Mr. Andy de Boer, the SD54 Trades coordinator, will also share stories about a variety of Maker events held around the district this year and share some plans for next year. Maker days are projects that involve creative design thinking and hands on skills and these skills are an important part of a student’s education.
Please plan to attend the Education Forum at the School Board Office on April 24th from 5:00-6:00 pm to learn about present SD54 Trades initiatives and plans for the future.
Monday, April 24th, 2017 – 5:00 pm
Location: School Board Office – 1235 Montreal Street, Smithers
Yours in education,
Chris A. van der Mark, Superintendent
